Julie Johnson

Hitchcock Center for the Environment
Executive Director
For the past 17 years, Julie has worked to strengthen the impact and reach of the Hitchcock Center for the Environment’s mission to foster a greater awareness and understanding of our environment and to develop environmentally literate citizens. She has kept the Hitchcock Center at the forefront of environmental education leadership through effective strategic planning, financial stewardship and partnership development. Over the last seven years, this has involved spearheading and managing the development of a new environmental learning center that is designed and built to meeting the world’s most rigorous standard of green building through the Living Building Challenge. This has involved engaging over 35 design- build team members, 300 funders, and 100 staff, board, volunteer and community stakeholders in creating not only a new, much larger facility to meet the rising demand for greater ecological understanding, but one that would serve as an innovative new teaching tool to advance the Center’s educational for greater sustainability. Since opening its new environmental learning center in 2016, the Hitchcock Center mentors, teaches and supports 12,000 people of all ages and backgrounds annually.
